Packaging

200 mL, 500 mL, and 1-liter bottles

Compounds

Each milliliter of Sulfamet Rooyan oral suspension contains 400 mg of sulfadiazine (sodium) and 80 mg of trimethoprim.

Mechanism of the Effect

Trimethoprim is a potent industrial antibacterial and antimicrobial agent, effective against most Gram-positive and Gram-negative bacteria. A notable feature of this product is its high safety margin—even doses several times higher than the recommended therapeutic level do not typically cause adverse effects.

Trimethoprim functions by inhibiting the enzyme dihydrofolate reductase, which plays a key role in the conversion of folic acid to folinic acid. This inhibition significantly affects bacterial replication and metabolism.

Sulfonamides, such as sulfadiazine, enhance the antimicrobial activity of trimethoprim—doubling its effectiveness. Sulfadiazine closely resembles para-aminobenzoic acid (PABA), and when present in sufficient concentration, it prevents PABA from being converted to folic acid. As a result, sulfadiazine disrupts the first stage of microbial metabolism, while trimethoprim blocks the subsequent stage, preventing the conversion of folic acid to folinic acid.

Trimethoprim is rapidly absorbed through the gastrointestinal tract, reaching peak blood concentration approximately 3 hours after administration. It is quickly taken up by tissues, with concentrations in kidneys and lungs reported to be higher than in other tissues. The drug has a half-life of approximately 10 hours, with 40–50% excreted unchanged via urine and the remainder eliminated as metabolites.

Use case

The combination of trimethoprim and sulfadiazine is an effective medication used to treat the following diseases:

– Colibacillosis – Avian Pasteurellosis (Fowl Cholera) – Salmonellosis (Fowl Typhoid, Pullorum Disease) – Infectious Coryza in poultry – Post-vaccination bacterial infections, and in general, any infections of bacterial origin

The amount and how to use

The contents of one 200 mL bottle should be diluted in 1000 liters of drinking water and administered for 3 to 5 consecutive days.

Caution

Keep the medication out of reach of children.

Drug interference

Reduced absorption and efficacy when administered with folic acid–containing drugs or supplements

Increased risk of hepatic and renal toxicity if used concurrently with hepatotoxic or nephrotoxic drugs

Potential interactions with anticoagulants, possibly altering their effects

Reduced activity of some bacteriostatic antibiotics if administered simultaneously

It is recommended that concurrent use of medications with Sulfamet be under veterinary supervision

Maintenance conditions

Sulfamet Rooyan should be stored in a dry place, at a temperature between 30°C and 150°C, and away from light.
