Mechanism of the Effect

Phoxim (Sebacil) is an ectoparasiticide belonging to the organophosphate class of drugs. It works by inhibiting cholinesterase enzymes, which leads to an accumulation of active acetylcholine at the nerve synapses, causing poisoning in the parasite.

Phoxim acts by contact and shows its effects after absorption. In mammals, if absorbed in small amounts (when used at normal dosages), Phoxim is metabolized in tissues by destructive enzymes, undergoing hydrolysis and oxidation, and is eventually excreted in the urine. However, these destructive enzymes are absent or present in very minute quantities in parasite tissues, leading to the accumulation of the drug and subsequent poisoning.

Use case

Phoxim (Sebacil) is used for controlling external parasites in domestic animals, with the exception of cats. It is particularly effective against:

Mites: Psoroptes, Chorioptes, and Sarcoptes mites, including Psoroptes species that are resistant to chlorinated hydrocarbons and diazinon (Psororegit).

Lice: Both sucking and biting lice.

Flies: Sheep keds (blood-feeding sheep flies), common flies, blowfly larvae, and screwworms.

Ticks.

The amount and how to use

Dosage: Typically 1 ml per 10 kg of body weight (this may vary depending on the animal type and severity of infection).

Administration: Administer via intramuscular or subcutaneous injection.

Duration of Treatment: Usually 3 to 5 days, or as advised by your veterinarian.

Caution

Avoid drinking, eating, or smoking during spraying.

Do not inhale or allow contact with eyes or skin.

Wear protective clothing, a hat, gloves, and a mask when using the product.

Do not use Phoxim on animals with diarrhea, chronic constipation, or respiratory, kidney, or heart disorders.

Treat young animals and pregnant females with extreme caution.

The dosage for animals and their premises in special conditions should be determined by a veterinarian.

Drug interference

May interact with calcium channel blockers (like verapamil), potentially reducing the antibiotic’s effectiveness.

Concurrent use with antacids may decrease drug absorption.

Combining with other antibiotics should be done cautiously and under veterinary supervision to prevent negative interactions.

Consulting a veterinarian before administering other medications simultaneously is essential.

Maintenance conditions

Store at 15 to 25 degrees Celsius.

Keep away from direct light and moisture.

Store in a dry and cool place.

Keep out of reach of children and non-target animals.

Close the container lid tightly after use.
